The granita in the middle of the night
A separate mention deserves this “lapa” which has existed for 60 years, and which for 27 has belonged to the “Zzu Orazio”, always around to sell his granitas, who stops at night in front of the Acitrezza fish market, to serve them in paper cups.

In the small square the nocturnal silence is interrupted by the unloading of the fish and the shouts of the sellers, a coming and going of men lifting tuna and swordfish from ten to fifty kilos, boxes full of sardines or masculine fish.
But we are also in the area where the Catania nightlife stops. For this reason, the customers of zu Orazio are divided into a bizarre mixture: pomaded young men who end the night at the disco with a granita, sometimes a little drunk, and rude men stained with blood from the fish they have just broken into pieces.

The granita tastes like the one that Sicilians, now in their forties, enjoyed as children. The granita of the “lape”, who went around and around still blowing the whistle to announce themselves, and placing the granitas in the “panari” lowered from the balconies.
The best flavors are mulberries and lemon, the preferable time is around 3:00 in the morning, when the best fish arrives at the market and the “Siculabrioche” brioche served by Zu Orazio are still warm.
